Ikea.
It's a fun, inexpensive (well, it's inexpensive if you don't buy anything! That may be a little harder than it looks, just beware!), kid-friendly, mom-interesting way to spend a little time.
Upsides: The showrooms are designed to be sat in, played in, and explored. They have a little cafe which opens at 9:30 (the main store opens at 10:00), where a lovely breakfast (scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, three pieces of bacon, and three strips of french toast) can be had for $1.99, and yummy cinnamon rolls for 99 cents. The dining area of the cafe has a kids area with little chairs and tables. Bibs, a microwave for warming baby food, child-sized cups, plates, and utensils are available. A mother's lounge for nursing babies. A family friendly parking area that allows you to skip walking through the main parking lot with its many, many cars. Huge (and I mean gigantic) elevators to fit all our strollers. A supervised play area for child over 40 inches and potty-trained. And enough amazing, well-priced home eye-candy to keep us moms busy for far longer than our kids will let us stay.
Downsides: It's in Draper, at least a 45 minute drive away (generally, using the carpool lane). It does get crowded, but if you go at 9:30 (for breakfast!) and try to get out by noon it isn't so bad. Some of their stuff is just, well, weird. I don't really need a floor lamp shaped like a semi-deflated white beachball. But that's just me. And did I mention that it is clear in Draper?
At any rate--bonus playgroup meeting! Thursday, Sept 20, 9:30 am, meet in the cafe (just go in the front doors when they open at 9:30, then up the elevator to the second floor. A sweet older lady will be standing there at the front doors to direct you if you get lost). Bring your strollers, good walking shoes, and an imagination!
See you there!
(The easiest way to get to Ikea is to take I-15 to the Bangerter Hwy exit (exit #289). Turn left (west) on Bangerter. Turn right (north) on 200 W. Stay on 200 W until you can turn right (east) into the Ikea parking lot.)
